“Inside Out boasts some of the most skilled circus
practitioners one could ever hope to encounter and with droll but
enlivening Irya’s Playground providing musical accompaniment,
you’re also, effectively getting two shows in one.”

“Inside Out is lovely to look at, combining the
romance of the spit-and-sawdust circus with a touch of a freak-show,
and something more contemporary. It is full of wonderful images: a
ghostly clown; a last support during which one of the participants
walks across the table on wine bottles; two women on a trapeze in
a beautiful sequence…” Lyn
Gardner, The Guardian , UK
“Enter Inside Out, surreal, cirque nouveau spectacle
that mixes avant-garde circus arts with theatre, dance, music and
street culture.”

| Description
Tilde Björfors founded Cirkus Cirkör
in 1995 with the goal to establish contemporary circus in Sweden.
The company’s vision is divided into two focuses: art and
education. Artistically, over thirty shows have been produced to
date including Inside Out and Wear
It Like a Crown. These show are based in the ideas
of contemporary Circus, which intertwines the traditional disciplines
of the circus (acrobatics, juggling, clowning, trapeze, tightrope
walking, and other stunt-oriented activities) with emerging and
new art forms of music, dance, theater, and street culture.
The other half of Cirkus Cirkör’s operation is focused
on education. As the company initially grew, Cirkus Cirkör
initially partnered with area schools to exchange rehearsal space
in school gymnasiums for instructional classes on various circus
arts for school children. These partnerships lead to the creation
of Circus in Schools. At the circus center, 40,000 children and
teens annually participate in various workshops and classes and
there is a professional college program in circus. Exploring contemporary
circus through education is fundamental for Björfors and the
members of Cirkus Cirkör because they truly believe in the
potential of contemporary circus to change the world through the
art, ideas, and practice of this form.

Tilde Björfors Biography
Tilde Björfors is the founder and artistic director
of Cirkus Cirkör and Professor of Contemporary Circus at the
University College of Dance in Stockholm. She has directed numerous
performances that have toured to critical acclaim in Sweden and other
countries worldwide such as Austria, China, Finland, France, Germany,
Japan, Norway, Singapore, Taiwan, the United Kingdom, and the United
States. Through the company, Björfors developed a national circus
center in Stockholm, Sweden. The combination of the company’s
stunning productions and unique center have lead it to be one of the
premier contemporary circus companies.
The idea of creating a contemporary circus ensemble came to Björfors
at twenty-four years of age while she was living with circus artists
in Paris. The world of the circus, filled with boldness, infinite
imagination, stunning visuals, and unseen choreography
swept Björfors. She immediately recognized the need for this
art to be introduced in Sweden and consequently, the globe.

Wear It Like a Crown
Wear it Like A Crown is Cirkus Cirkör’s
newest show. Directed by Tilde Björfors with
music by Rebekka Karijord, The title “Wear
it Like A Crown” is from a song on Karijord’s album, The
noble art of letting go. In this tragicomic and absurd performance,
Björfors explores chaos and order and the transformation of risks
into opportunities. It is about choosing to wear our failures, fears,
and shortcomings like a crown. To polish it, and wear it with pride.
On a revolving stage, the circus performers move through a world
of illusions, shadow play, knife throwing, acrobatics, juggling,
and drama. Six odd characters, feeling like they are the loneliest
on earth, wrestle with their own dilemmas. Every character has his
or her own way of trying to reach the others: through ping pong
balls, acrobatics, and suction cups, among other things. In Wear
it Like A Crown, Björfors continues to examine the big
questions in life in relation to the world of circus. This show
has been created in an attempt to understand the chaotic order of
the right cerebral hemisphere.
Inside Out
Inside Out is a work of contemporary circus that tells a
simple but ageless story: the story of following your heart’s
desire. The idea of risk is doubly reinforced throughout Inside
Out with each feat of daring performed by the company’s
superb artists as the narrative story unfolds onstage. In addition
to the formidable and enchanting performances of Cirkus Cirkör,
the company is accompanied live by Swedish rock band Irya’s
Playground.
