Yanira Castro + Company is a New York City based ensemble of dancers and designers established in 1997 by director/choreographer Yanira Castro. The company is dedicated to creating work that fuses experiments in movement with original music, costumes and visual elements such as film, video and installations to create vivid, contemporary performances. The company develops environments for their dances constructing installations that transform traditional venues or highlight unconventional sites and are unique to each space the piece is performed.

Yanira Castro + Company Biography

Puerto-Rican born choreographer Yanira Castro has collaborated with a core group of performers and designers on individual projects since arriving in New York in 1994. In her work, she integrates different media including movement, music, text and visual elements such as film, video and installation to develop multi-layered works that encourage a complexity and openness of interpretation while being precise in form and structure.

Center of Sleep - 60 minutes

A dance installation with an immersive visual and sound environment that will significantly transform each theater it is stage in, Center of Sleep is a quartet for two men and two women. Castro investigates the metamorphosing body as a site of intense potential and awkward sensuality. Inspired by radical changes that occur during sleep, gestation, and metamorphosis, Center of Sleep is a place of viscous movement and primal action where the boundaries between viewer and performer shift and become malleable. The audience will enter a performance environment Castro renders “innocent” – their viewing experience, within the performance, will be unique to their personal approach towards the piece. Center of Sleep invites the audience to inhabit it.
