The Luminarium Experience

Since 1992, Architects of Air has toured Luminaria, their one-of-a-kind accessible, walk-thru, inflatable structures designed and created by Alan Parkinson. Described as “somewhere between womb and cathedral,” Parkinson’s artistic vision creates a sense of wonder at the beauty of light within each Luminarium.

With a capacity of 80 people at one time, a Luminarium can host up to 200 people each hour it is open.

Architects of Air has welcomed more than 4 million visitors, in over 47 countries, across 5 continents into their Luminaria. The company has created a safe and nurturing environment for all populations, working with host presenters for the best experience in all aspects of the planning and operations of the exhibition. The Luminaria are available for variety of contexts: as part of your annual performing arts programming; for music festivals; museums; at community or corporate events; for architecture and design-related events, etc.

Architects of Air originated in Nottingham, UK as a charitable project designed to offer inflatable play experiences to inner-city children’s projects. In 1982, Alan Parkinson was employed as the project supervisor, initially for a half day a week. In the course of four years, the project expanded into a full-time role. In 1986, the company built its first inflatable environment – what would later be known as a “Luminarium.” 1992, Architects of Air was established.

Architects of Air’s ambition has never been one of growth for its own sake, but as interest in the Luminaria have grown, so too has the need to create more Luminaria – and with it, the need to grow a team. Today, Architects of Air is supported by six permanent staff members who oversee workshop operations, including design, construction, and maintenance. They also direct touring logistics and guide the overall management and vision of the company.

To deliver each installation, Architects of Air relies on a trusted pool of freelance Luminarium Managers, some of whom have been part of our journey for over 25 years. These experienced professionals are on site for the entire duration of an exhibition, ensuring the Luminarium operates safely and that visitors, hosts, and local staff enjoy the optimum Luminarium experience.
