Avimukta:

Sat, January 14, 2023, 9:05-9:25am & 11:35-11:55am, at NY City Center, Studio 4

This full-length, intimate ritual for the stage features mother/daughter soloists Ranee Ramaswamy, Aparna Ramaswamy, and Ashwini Ramaswamy along with three additional dancers as they honor the memory of their ancestors in a rich lighting design by Willy Cessa. The dancers are seekers engrossed in solitary rituals of sacred contemplation that become an ecstatic prayer celebrating the inevitable dissolution of life. Tours with a total of 7.

An excellent company. Their devotion to the Bharatanatyam style and to treating that lineage as a living language is always radiantly clear.

These Are The Ones We Fell Among:

Sat, January 14, 2023, 9:25-9:45am, at NY City Center, Studio 4

A commission for the Swiss-based company inkBoat and performed by Shinichi Iova-Koga and Dana Iova-Koga, this full-length dancetheater duet juxtaposes elegance in the face of extinction, while looking for humor and grace amid excrement and fear. With Carlson’s poignant sense of humor, coupled with a nod to the absurd, this 60 min performance wrestles with the current potential  and predicaments of being alive on our planet. Tours with a total of 4.

A splendid hour – an affirmation of form and content exploded into a new field of sorts. What a tour de force!

Invisible Cities:

Sat, January 14, 2023, 9:45-10:05am, at NY City Center, Studio 5

Ramaswamy collaboratively reimagines Italo Calvino’s metaphysical novel through choreography and projected visuals with interactive animation created live by artist Kevork Mourad. Anchored in the South Indian classical dance form of Bharatanatyam and collaboratively reinterpreted by dancer/choreographers of four distinct cultural backgrounds/dance lineages (Bharatanatyam, Gaga technique, Contemporary/African Diasporic, and Breaking) this work can be presented as an NPN engagement. Tours with a total of 14.

“Ramaswamy’s imagination united and flourished, making space, not just for more generations but for more ways of thinking.”

Thunder + Hymn:

Sat, January 14, 2023, 10:20-10:50am, at NY City Center, Studio 5

Thunder + Hymn is one of the scores created for personal activation from Last Audience. Enacted specifically and uniquely with and by each audience, Last Audience is a live (or virtual) laboratory for the communal work of conjuring. Each score grapples with agency and manipulation, negotiating the individual and the collective inside a theatrical context. Drawing on language and themes from requiems and Greek classical tragedy on judgement and democratic formation, Last Audience moves inside the unstable space between the perfunctory and the transformative.

“The curator Tara Aisha Willis describes the booklet format as ‘somewhere between an instruction manual and a prayer book.’”

This residency-based engagement features a cast of local dancers from each community, ranging in age from 12 years old to 84. They join Co Artistic Directors Monica Bill Barnes & Robbie Saenz de Viteri in the culminating performance, having learned their parts over the course of one week. de Viteri interviews each cast member, incorporating their voices and stories into the show, giving the audience an unprecedented look into the life of a dancer as a new kind of sports hero – one that keeps moving against all odds. Tours with a total of 4.
